PRINCETON — Two people will be facing charges of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a local woman who was found Monday morning at an apartment building in the Lilly Grove area of Princeton.

The shooting occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Thornton Avenue near Princeton, Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows said. Sherry Matthews, 44, of Princeton has been shot and killed. She was struck in the neck.

A weapon, a .40 caliber automatic pistol, has been recovered, he added. A large sum of money was also found.

“We recovered what we think was all the money that was stolen and some other property,” Meadows said.

A second person who lived at the apartment, Edward Lee Thomas, 41, of Princeton was hit in the chin, Meadows said. He was outside the apartment and flagged down deputies when they arrived on the scene.

Thomas was treated at Princeton Community Hospital and later gave a statement to investigators, Meadows said.

One suspect, Steven McDonald, 32, of Bluefield was arrested Monday morning, and a second suspect, Latasha Marie Kanode, 23, of Princeton was arrested at approximately 5:30 p.m. after her father brought her to the sheriff’s department, Meadows stated.

Both McDonald and Kanode were charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and attempted murder, Meadows said. They were being detained Monday evening pending arraignment.

Detective R.M. Combs is the lead investigator. The sheriff’s midnight shift did the original investigation, and the day shift continued it, Meadows said. The department also had assistance from the Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and a polygraph examiner with the West Virginia State Police detachment in Beckley.
