Drug trafficking probe nets 50 arrests

By CHARLES OWENS

TAZEWELL, Va. — An ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in Tazewell County has netted 50 arrests, police said Monday.

A total of 51 indictments have been returned on 50 individuals, including 23 men and 27 women, on 226 drug-related charges, Commonwealth Attorney Dennis Lee said during a press conference at the Tazewell Town Hall.

Among the indictments, Lee said a clerk at the ABC store in Claypool Hill was indicted after allegedly selling drugs to an undercover officer at the ABC store. Lee said Cynthia W. Mitchell, 48, of Richlands, was indicted on charges of distribution of oxycodone, a schedule II controlled substance, distribution of Suboxone, a schedule III controlled substance, distribution of cocaine, a schedule II controlled substance, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, a schedule II controlled substance. Lee said Mitchell also was indicted on 11 counts of prescription fraud for allegedly purchasing narcotics over the Internet without a doctor’s prescription.

“The investigation revealed that she distributed oxycodone and cocaine out of the ABC store,” Richlands Police Chief William Puckett said. “As a result of the investigation we conducted out of the ABC store, it resulted in a search of her residence. She was indicted on 11 subsequent counts of buying drugs off the Internet. We also inspected the computer system at the ABC store.”

In another unrelated case, Lee said a Bluefield, Va.-based business owner, Luther Ronald Millsap, 63, of Bastian, Va., was indicted by the grand jury on a charge of distribution of Hydromorphone, a schedule II controlled substance.

“Mr. Ron Milsap ran a business in Bluefield, Va.,” Bluefield, Va. Police Chief Harry Cundiff said. “The drug task force was very fortunate to get a person in there to do some work for us.”

Cundiff said the investigation also resulted in the recovery of 66 weapons from Millsap Electric, and the discovery of 28 exotic birds.

In a third unrelated case, Lee said two individuals charged on the federal level with the theft of explosives from a construction site near the new state prison in Pocahontas also were indicted on drug-related charges.

Lee said Angela Renae Dameron, 30, of Pocahontas, was indicted on charges of possession of cocaine, a schedule II controlled substance, and possession of marijuana (misdemeanor); and Derick Raven Williams, 25, of Pocahontas, was indicted on charges of possession of cocaine, a schedule II controlled substance and possession of marijuana (misdemeanor).

“They were indicted federally and on state charges on the theft of a half-ton of explosives from the Pocahontas prison site,” Lee said. “They are presently incarcerated in the federal system.”

Lee said the narcotics were discovered by the FBI as part of its investigation into the missing explosives.

In all, 50 people were indicted by a grand jury sitting in a special session on April 3. Lee said it was the first time in recent memory that the number of women indicted exceeded the number of men.

“Even though people don’t see a marked car or police cruiser, the task force is out there every day working,” Tazewell Police Chief Brian Hieatt said.

“The investigations do take many months,” Sheriff H.S. Caudill said. “We haven’t stopped. We still have active investigations going on.”

Lee said the arrests were the result of investigations conducted during the last year in a collaborative effort by the Tazewell County Narcotics Task Force, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, the Richlands Police Department, the Bluefield Police Department, the Tazewell Police Department, the Virginia State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the state Alcohol Beverage Commission.
