Officials with the Mercer County Health Department are hoping at-risk residents will take advantage of a new program providing free hepatitis vaccines for a limited time.
Judy Bolton, RN, a public health nurse with the department, said Mercer County has the highest hepatitis B rates and second highest hepatitis C rates in the nation.
As May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, Bolton said the health department will be offering free vaccinations to eligible patients and providing information to the public about hepatitis prevention. Bolton said the free vaccines are only available for a limited time but not many residents have taken advantage so far.
Bolton said the health department will be open on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to offer the vaccine as well as taking appointments. To schedule an appointment for the hepatitis vaccine, Bolton said citizens may call the health department at 304-324-8851.
