Local counties remain under a flood watch until Wednesday evening

BLUEFIELD —  Heavy rain has prompted the National Weather Service to issue flood watches for counties in southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia.

Rainfall rates ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 inches per hour in some cases and saturated ground conditions may bring water to low lying areas. Rivers and creeks to rise rapidly, too, forecasters said.

Flood watches have been posted for Mercer, Monroe and Summers counties in West Virginia and the Virginia counties of Bland, Giles, Tazewell and Wythe. The flood watch will remain in effect through this evening.
