Police pursue two on foot in separate incidents

LASHMEET — Mercer County Sheriff’s deputies, troopers with the West Virginia State Police, and a U.S. Marshal engaged in dual foot pursuits in two areas of the county Friday.

D.A. Furches said Dennis Lane, 36, of Wyoming County, was arrested following to a traffic stop and subsequent foot pursuit Friday morning in the Lashmeet area.

“Deputy E.P. Sparks performed a traffic stop on Acuff Road on a reckless driver on a motorcycle,” Furches said. “The suspect then took off on foot.”

Furches said the sheriff’s department K-9 units, as well as several troopers with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment, responded to the area between Acuff Road and Reese Harmon Ridge Road to search for the subject in the woods.

“Trooper (J.A.) Cook heard some dogs barking over the hillside and flushed the subject out,” Furches said. “The suspect was then apprehended by Cpl. A.P. Christian with the state police.”

Lane is currently being held at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver on $10,000 bond.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s deputies were also working to track another subject who fled from police on Kelly’s Tank Road in the Oakvale area.

Furches said Sgt. S.J. Cary and Deputy J.D. Ellison with the sheriff’s department were assisting Deputy Marshal K.L. Long with the execution of a federal warrant on Paul Hoston, 48, of Oakvale, Friday morning.

Furches said Hoston fled from his residence on Kelly’s Tank Road into the woods when he found out officers were approaching.

A spokesperson with the U.S. Marshal Service said Hoston was wanted on a supervised release violation stemming from a previous drug violation. Hoston was originally indicted in 2011 as part of the Bluefield Pill Initiative.

“They called out our K-9s to do the tracking,” Furches said. “We tracked him for about three miles over rugged terrain. The pursuit took about two hours. They found him around the mountainside and took him into custody.”

Hoston is currently incarcerated at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.
