Police investigate shooting

LASHMEET — One man was taken into custody Monday after a shooting was reported along Beeson Road off Route 10 near Lashmeet.

The Mercer County Sheriff’ Department and the West Virginia State Police were dispatched at approximately 10:55 a.m. to 3635 Beeson Road after Mercer County 911 was alerted that a man had been shot.

The lead investigator, Detective D.W. Sparks Jr. of the sheriff’s department, said at the scene that deputies and troopers were searching for a firearm. Deputies could be seen looking in a nearby field and a large stack of wood for signs of the weapon. Sheriff Don Meadows arrived soon afterward to join in the search.

Sparks said one person, David Cline, 31, of Beeson Road, had been arrested and would be charged with attempt to commit first-degree murder and malicious wounding.

Sparks stated that Cline appeared to be a neighbor of the victim, Scotty Coomes, 53, of Beeson Road.

A motive behind the shooting was still being determined Monday.

The shooting appeared to have taken place outside the victim’s home. A handgun was later recovered at the scene, Sparks said.

“As best we can find out so far, it occurred somewhere in the roadway,” Sparks said.

Coomes had been shot once in the back and in the chest, Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ash said.

He was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center. Ash did not know Coomes’ condition Monday afternoon.

Cline was being held at the sheriff’s department pending an arraignment hearing Monday evening before Magistrate Susan Honaker, Sparks said. The investigation is ongoing.
