Area schools compete in annual Reading Bee

BLUEFIELD — Teams from 14 Mercer County schools competed in the annual Mercer County Reading Bee Wednesday at Bluefield State College.

The Reading Bee consists of teams of students who test their knowledge in a series of  contests including comprehension, vocabulary, reading/language arts skills and reader’s theater presentation.

After a morning full of competition and judging, the overall winner of the 2014 Mercer County Reading Bee was Sun Valley Elementary School.

“It feels amazing,” Katherine Webb, a fourth grader at Sun Valley said with excitement.

This was Webb’s second year at the contest and she felt like her team did really well.

“I just love coming and competing and getting to know other kids from different schools. I think my favorite part of the competition is the vocabulary and knowledge parts,” Webb said.

Hayden Ellis, a third grader and youngest member of the reading team, said his favorite part of the contest was the reader’s theatre and reading the different parts.

“The best part of reading is to find out what happens next,” Ellis said.

Sun Valley Coach Jennifer Furches was extremely proud of her team. “They have worked so hard, doing extra work before, during and after school to prepare. I am just thrilled, they have really earned it,” Furches said.

The competition was developed by the late Tom Colley, who served as the executive editor of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph at the time of his death, in conjunction with the literacy committee of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce and Mercer County Schools.
