Police arrest man after shooting at Lewis St. apartments

BLUEFIELD — A city man was in custody late Monday evening after allegedly shooting an apartment complex neighbor in the back of the head.

Police were called to apartments on Lewis Street Monday evening at approximately 8:15 p.m. in response to a shooting, according to Detective K.L Adams of the Bluefield Police Department.

The victim, Steven Rhodes, of Bluefield, was able to identify the shooter to police, Bluefield Police Chief Dennis Dillow said.

Approximately two hours after the shooting, a suspect, Trevon Strange, was taken into custody, Dillow said.

Strange resides in apartment six of the complex, while Rhodes lives in number three.

Rhodes was airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center hospital after being shot in the back of the head behind the ear, Adams said.

“At this time it looks like he might live through the shooting,” Adams said.

Police officials say Rhodes and Strange had a previous altercation about an hour before the shooting.

Shortly after the shooting, police said they had a suspect.
