BLUEFIELD — Police in Bluefield are investigating an attempted armed robbery of First Century Bank on College Avenue.

The bank lobby is closed at this time as a result of the attempted armed robbery, according to Bluefield Police Chief Dennis Dillow.

A middle-aged female suspect wearing dark clothing entered the bank, approached the counter, and gave a bank teller a note demanding money. The woman also brandished a firearm, according to Detective K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department.

A bank teller, who was attempting to comply with the orders, dropped some change and hit a panic alarm button as she bent over to pick up the change. The suspect then fled the bank without any money, and was last seen on College Avenue.

Dillow said the bank should reopen later this afternoon.

Officers, who are on scene investigating the attempted bank robbery, also are working an unrelated three-vehicle collision that occurred in front of the bank. One vehicle struck and knocked a light pole down onto the sidewalk area of College Avenue. At least one person is being transported to the hospital as a result of the accident.
