New businesses look to open shop in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — A few new businesses could help to bring an economic boost to Bluefield in the near future, including a new Dollar General.

The Dollar General store is expected to be open sometime this year, according to Assistant City Manager Josh Cline.

“The building is going into the old Cowboy Up building on Cumberland Road,” Cline said. “They are in the process of making some modifications to the building right now.”

There has also been an interest in a Tudors Biscuit World coming to the city, Cline said.

“We have not received any type of formal notification, but have been told there is an interest,” Cline said. “We have also heard that there are possibly a few other businesses interested in coming to Bluefield and we hope that we will receive formal notification from some of them in the coming weeks.”

Deskins Candy has also put up a sign on Jefferson Street.

“We have not received formal notification from Deskins, but I am hoping we will have more information in the next couple weeks about their move to the city and also have more information on other businesses planning on coming to the area,” Cline said.

City of Bluefield Building Inspector Gerald Steele also added that Dollar General has submitted plans but there is no timeline on when the store will open.

“I do know that they plan on doing a small addition on the old Cowboy Up building and some renovations on the inside. No permits have been pulled yet, but plans have been submitted,” Steele said.
