Man arrested and charged in connection with multiple armed robberies

BLUEFIELD — A man charged in connection with the armed robbery of a Tazewell County convenience store, and the attempted armed robbery of two additional convenience stations, is currently being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without bond.

Dispatchers with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office received a call at 11:58 p.m. Thursday from the store clerks at the Fas Mart on Gov. G.C. Peery Highway in Claypool Hill advising they had just been robbed and that the suspect was armed with a knife or box cutter, according to Major Harold Heatley, chief deputy of the sheriff’s office.

Heatley said deputies were immediately dispatched to the scene and investigators were sent to the scene as well to process the evidence. While heading to the scene deputies were notified that a suspect matching the same description had came into the Little General store in Richlands and went behind the counter while holding a box cutter as well but no money or demands for money had been made.

Heatley said it was immediately apparent that the same suspect was involved in both incidents. Heatley said Bobby Shannon Altizer, 29, of Natures Way Road in Swords Creek, Va., was arrested and charged with armed robbery.

Deputies from Tazewell and Russell counties searched for the suspect through the night and were successful in getting Altizer to turn himself in. Heatley said he spoke with the suspect on the phone for a period of time and convinced him to meet him at the Shell Store in Claypool Hill not far from the scene of the crime.

“Tonight was a perfect example of agencies working together to bring these criminals to justice,” Sheriff Brian Hieatt said.

Heatley said Altizer is currently charged with one count of armed robbery based on being positively identified by both store clerks. Altizer is facing additional charges of attempted armed Robbery in Richlands and in Russell County. Heatley said officials also are investigating the attempted armed robbery of the Valero gas station in Rosedale, Va.

Heatley said a total of $345.17 was taken from the Fas Mart. Altizer is currently being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority without bond.
