BLUEFIELD — More than $800 in donations Wednesday edged the Community Christmas Tree campaign past the $14,000 mark, however the drive remains far short of this year’s $30,000 fundraising goal.

Known as the Little Jimmie campaign, the Community Christmas Tree provides toys, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies to hundreds of local children in need each year. The event is sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.

The $815 in donations Wednesday brought this year’s campaign total to $14,388.

Organizers expect to serve more than 800 children at this year’s party on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield.

At the first round of registration for the Little Jimmie party, more than 428 children were signed up to receive gifts. A second round of sign-ups will be held Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bluefield City Auditorium. Children — newborns to age 12 — can be signed up. Parents or legal guardians are required to bring their child’s health insurance or WIC card, or the child’s birth certificate.

Those who would like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
