UPDATE: Shooting victim still in critical condition at Roanoke hospital

BLUEFIELD — A Bluefield woman who was shot Monday night during a robbery that took the life of her husband is still in critical condition today at a Roanoke, Va. hospital.

Monika Watkins of 201 Burton Street was shot and sustained other injuries, and her husband, John Watkins, was also shot and died at the scene. A former neighbor, Donald Adams, 54, of Bluefield, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He later confessed and announced his intention to plead guilty. He is in custody pending a bond hearing before a circuit court judge. Adams said he went to the couple to rob them for money to buy drugs.

Detective A.L. Crook of the Bluefield Police Department checked on Monika Watkins’ condition today, according to an administrative assistant for Chief J.W. Wilson. She was still listed in critical condition.
