Woman who attempted to rob Bluefield bank at gunpoint captured in Tennessee

BLUEFIELD — A woman who attempted to rob a Bluefield bank at gunpoint has been captured in Tennessee , police said Thursday.

Beverly Mangum, 51, of Bluefield, was captured in Tennessee during a home invasion, according to Bluefield Police Chief Dennis Dillow. Dillow said Mangum is being held in Tennessee on an unrelated criminal charge.

Dillow said the Bluefield Police Department has put a hold on Mangus for the bank robbery in Bluefield pending her release in Tennessee.

Dillow said the woman is charged with the attempted robbery of the First Century Bank on College Avenue in Bluefield on April 12.

The woman, whose image was caught on a bank security camera, entered the bank, approached the counter, and gave a bank teller a note demanding money. The note indicated if the clerk did not comply she would fire her weapon. The suspect also brandished a handgun, according to an earlier report by Detective K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department.

The bank teller, who was attempting to comply with the orders, dropped some change in the floor and hit a panic alarm button as she bent over to pick up the change. Adams said the suspect then began to get nervous and fled the bank without any money.
