The state Division of Highways has approved an emergency contract for the removal of a major rockslide on Route 1 between Iaeger and Panther in McDowell County.
The contractor was expected to begin the work Tuesday evening. The DOH anticipates having the road reopened by the end of the week, according to Carrie Bly, a communications specialist for the state Division of Transportation.
The rock slide occurred April 6. Bly said the work is estimated to cost approximately $25,000.
Parents have expressed concerns about school buses having to take a long and dangerous detour through the Panther, Isaban and Mohawk communities as a result of the closure of Route 1.
