Proposals for McDowell housing being accepted

WELCH — In an effort to provide more quality housing in McDowell County, the county’s Economic Development Authority is accepting proposals for a new development project.

The authority is in the process of obtaining proposals for 13.2 acres of property to be known as the Stoneridge Housing Development, EDA Director Penni Adams said.

“The market for the new housing is for prison officials and folks who have to travel into work in McDowell. Such as teachers and other young professionals,” Adams said.

The development will consist of a mixture of townhouses and single-family homes available for rent or sale, Adams said.

“We have been told the biggest reason people don’t live here is because there is no quality housing or rentals available,” Adams said.

The EDA has had several inquiries about the housing project and will be accepting proposals through April 30.

“After we receive everything the proposals will go through a selection process. There are a lot of factors that contribute to how quickly the project will be start to finish. There is no certain time frame for the project to be complete but we are hopeful things will move along with the project,” Adams said.
