McDowell man arrested for theft at mine site

WELCH — A Northfork man has been arrested for the theft of batteries from a coal mine site in McDowell County.

Joseph Eric Sacra, 33, was arrested Monday by deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release issued by the department Tuesday.

The theft occurred at the mine site in Welch on March 6. According to the release, 34 batteries valued at $300 each were stolen from the mine.

“During the process of the investigation and contacting local salvage yards the detectives were able to determine that a Joseph Eric Sacra from Northfork had stolen the batteries and then sold them for scrap,” the release stated.

Sacra was arraigned in front of Magistrate Daniel Mitchell, placed on a $20,000 bond and remanded back to the McDowell County holding unit awaiting transport to the South Western Regional Jail.
