Electricity returning to customers in Mercer, McDowell, Tazewell

MONTCALM — Appalachian Power crews expect to restore service today after a line went out of service in Mercer County, a company representative said.

Approximately 11,600 customers in Mercer County lost power. Another 585 were without service in McDowell County, and 1,274 customers in Tazewell County, Va. did not have electricity, according to Appalachian Power.

Shortly after 2 p.m. a line went out of service while crews were conducting maintenance at Minnix Mountain Station near Montcalm, said Phil Moye a representative of Appalachian Power. The line supplies power to Minnix Mountain, New Hope and Switchback. Those stations provide power to 13,000 customers in Mercer and part of McDowell.

Moye said the company is in the process of restoring power. Power has returned to approximately half of the customers affected. The estimated time of restoration was 4 p.m., Moye said.
