Witness recalls details at scene

BRUSHFORK — Members of a local church were preparing for a service when a terrible tragedy occurred just outside of their place of worship.

A fatal crash that claimed the lives of two children occurred on U.S. Route 52 near Deliverance Temple in Brushfork Wednesday evening.

Tracy Fowler, a Deliverance Temple member who was on her way into a weekly Wednesday evening church service, said she had just gotten out of her car when she heard the crash.

“I was in the church parking lot and had just gotten out of my car when I heard a loud crash,” Fowler said. “I turned around and saw a car spinning out of control and another car had hit it, along with a third car that lost control and ran into the church marquee. I dialed 911 and other people in the parking lot ran over to help. There were two small children in the back seat and a child in the front seat, along with the mother. The child in the front seat had gotten out and kept pointing to his head. There was so much going on at one time.”

The accident occurred Wednesday at 6:50 p.m. Two children, ages unavailable, died in the accident, according to an earlier report from Lt. J.E. Parks with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

“We were preparing for our service at the time,” the Reverend Dave Kirby, pastor of the Deliverance Temple Church said. “We went into the church and all of us joined hands to pray for all of the families involved, all of the emergency care-givers and everyone who assisted at the wreck.

“I said that I know there is a mightier God with a mightier strength than what we have,” Kirby said. “We need to turn to Him at a time like this.”

Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, Bluewell Fire Department and Bluefield Rescue responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
