The five directors-elect of the Bluefield city board met as a group this morning and selected Tom Cole to serve as mayor, and although there is no requirement under city code to select a vice mayor, the directors-elect selected Barbara Thompson Smith to serve as vice mayor.
“The vote was unanimous,” Bluefield City Clerk Bobbi Kersey said.
“It’s an honor for me to be selected to serve as mayor,” Cole said. “I think this group of individuals is very unified. It’s a real honor for me to know I have the support of the board.”
Cole said that the Secretary of State’s office told them they had 10 days to select a mayor from their group after the election was certified. The election was certified on Monday. The group will take office on Aug. 1.
