BLUEFIELD, Va. —

Educators from across the two Virginias were honored for their dedication to their work, devotion to their students and contributions to local schools Tuesday evening

Several educators from around the region were honored during the 9th annual Tea for Teachers event, sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Cole Chevrolet.

The top honors for the night went to Tami Cooper of Glenwood Elementary who received the 2013 Teacher of the Year Award. Cooper was overcome with emotion when her name was announced.

“I am truly, truly surprised and amazed,” Cooper said. “This makes me feel special and let’s me know I am appreciated by someone.”

The two winners of the 2013 Excellence in Education Award were Jodi Scarberry from Graham Intermediate School and Ashley Vaughn from Glenwood Elementary School. Honorable mentions went to Gail Faw with Bluefield Intermediate and Tammy Williams with Graham Intermediate.

Tom Cole with Cole Chevrolet said teachers deserve more praise and recognition from the community.

“We are proud to be a sponsor of this great event along with the Bluefield Daily Telegraph,” Cole said. “The education community is important to Cole Chevrolet and that is a big reason we wanted to be a sponsor of this. Personally, I value the effort and sacrifices these educators make as teachers. It is a calling to be a teacher. We as a community are grateful for them.”

Daily Telegraph Advertising Director Teri Hale said Tuesday’s event was the largest in Tea for Teacher’s history.

“We had more than 2,000 letters sent in, which was tremendous,” Hale said. “We had around 300 teachers nominated, which might be the largest we’ve ever had. This is the largest event we’ve ever had, which is absolutely great.”

Daily Telegraph Publisher Darryl Hudson said the event stresses the importance of thanking local teachers for all they do.

“It is hard to believe that another year has gone by and we get to honor another group of outstanding educators,” Hudson said. “This is one of our favorite times of year since we get to celebrate education and the teachers who provide that education to our children. I would particularly like to thank Tom Cole for making this event possible.”
