A resident who was retrieving a trash bag in her back yard was injured this afternoon when a large tree suddenly toppled and pinned her.

Mercer County 911 received a call 1:42 p.m. that a tree had struck a woman. The Bluefield Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad was dispatched to 1403 College Avenue near the intersection with Copley Avenue.

First responders found a woman pinned by the branches of a fallen tree behind the house, said Capt. Stan McKenzie. She was talking to rescue personnel and firefighters at that time, he stated.

The woman, whose name was not available, was taken to the Bluefield Regional Medical Center for treatment. The tree came out of the ground at its base when the woman left her back porch to get a trash bag that had blown away, McKenzie said.
