Twin accidents block traffic near Bluefield on U.S. Route 52

BLUEFIELD — Two accidents blocked traffic on both sides of U.S. Route 52 Friday afternoon near the Bluefield city limits.

At approximately 1:45 p.m., the driver of a dump truck lost control of his vehicle and hit the side of the cliff in front of the New Image store on Route 52 within the city limits according to Sgt. G.W. Lightfoot with the Bluefield Police Department.

Minutes later, the driver of a light blue Chevrolet Cavalier stopped to allow crews to clean up the first accident in front of the Fleet Pride, Inc. on U.S. Route 52 just near the city welcome sign, according to Lt. Joe Parks with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of a dark blue Subaru Forester then collided with the back of the Cavalier.

Parks said the driver of a dark blue Subaru Forester said he was distracted by something in his vehicle and did not stop in time to avoid collision with the Subaru. The Subaru suffered front end damage while the Cavalier had both back end and front end damage, ultimately hitting a cliff side as the result of the impact from the accident.
