All lanes of Bluefield Avenue were blocked and one person was injured after a two-car crash in front of Citizens Building Supply knocked down a light pole.
The crash occurred at approximately 1 p.m. after two cars crashed and came to rest in front of the construction supply store. A light pole in front of the store was broken off at the base as a result of the accident and its bottom half came to rest at the store’s front doors.
Patrolman M.T. Hatfield of the Bluefield Police Department said surveillance videos helped police determine how the accident occurred.
“A video from a local store showed the driver of the first vehicle was coming eastbound down Bluefield Avenue at the same time a state electric truck was attempting to turn into Citizen’s,” Hatfield said. “For some reason, the car cut across the lane where the electric truck was and then swerved toward the store, hitting a parked vehicle with its front end and a light pole with its back end before coming to rest. The electric truck was not damaged.”
Hatfield said the driver of the vehicle was transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center with chest pains and complaining of other minor injuries. The parked car was unoccupied at the time of the collision, but Hatfield said both vehicles were most likely totaled.
The Bluefield Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad were also dispatched to the scene. All lanes of Bluefield Avenue at Citizens Building Supply were blocked for approximately half an hour until first responders cleared the scene.
