FAYETTEVILLE (AP) —
Police are looking for five men suspected of operating a paving scam in southern West Virginia.
Media outlets report the men are believed to be involved in stealing money from a couple in the Danese area of Fayette County.
A news release from the Fayette sheriff’s office says four men offered to pave the couple’s driveway and were paid $800 in cash last week.
The release says the next day, a man claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy accused the couple of giving the workers counterfeit money, demanded all the money in the home for testing and was given more than $2,000. When he didn’t return, the couple called authorities.
Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler says the men are believed to be operating out of the Bluefield and Princeton areas.
