Students at Dudley Primary have traded in their regular four-legged chairs for something with a little more bounce.
Stability balls have been introduced as seating in the school in a move school officials said has vastly improved student behavior. Principal Greg Furrow said one of his teachers asked if she could try an idea she read about in an educational study. After seeing success on a small scale, Furrow said school officials decided to expand the program.
“We are seeing great results,” Furrow said. “It is just in some classes now, but we aren’t opposed to going school-wide. We are looking to raise the money. It’s an interesting concept and the kids are really responding positively.”
Furrow said students who use the stability balls instead of chair have shown a great improvement in their classroom behavior, and said other school administrators in Mercer County have expressed interest in bringing stability balls to their schools as well.
