Halloween in Mercer County being moved back to Oct. 31

BLUEFIELD — The Mercer County Commission will call a special meeting Thursday to move Halloween trick or treating back from Tuesday, Oct. 30 to Wednesday, Oct. 31.

County commissioners will convene the special meeting 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mercer County Courthouse, County Coordinator Vicky Reed announced today.

The county commission had moved the date forward from Oct. 31 to Oct. 30 so trick or treating would not conflict with Wednesday night church services, said commissioner Jay Mills.

“One time before, it came on a Sunday,” Mills recalled of a previous Halloween. “We had several calls about changing it. That was the only reason — it was church time for a lot of people.”

The commission had received calls from people complaining about this year’s change in Halloween’s date.

“Evidently, a lot of people don’t like it, and we have to do what the people want,” Mills said.
