Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle on Route 460 in Tazewell County

POUNDING MILL, Va. — A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle on U.S. Route 460 in Tazewell County  was apparently standing in the center of the road at the time of the accident, according to the Virginia State Police.

Earl Junior Coffey, 59, was struck and killed Saturday at 3:10 a.m. on eastbound Route 460, about a half mile west of Route 637, in the Pounding Mill, Va., community, according to a report by investigating Trooper W.B. McCoy of the Virginia State Police Claypool Hill, Va., detachment.

Coffey was apparently standing in the center of the road. The man died at the scene of the accident, according to the report. Coffey had a Pounding Mill, Va., address on his driver’s license, a state police dispatcher said Monday. However, a death notice received Monday by the Daily Telegraph listed the man’s address as Montcalm in Mercer County.

Kayla Ratliff, 22, of Tazewell County, Va., was operating a 2003 Mazda MV6 that was traveling eastbound on Route 460 when the vehicle struck the pedestrian, McCoy said in the report.

The crash is being considered an accident at this time, and no citations or charges have been filed, according Sgt. T.W. Carter, also of the Virginia State Police Claypool Hill, Va., detachment.

“Right now there is no reason to believe otherwise,” Carter said.

McCoy was not available Monday for additional comment regarding the investigation.
