Investigators: Argument led to shooting

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

PRINCETON — Authorities said an intense and emotional argument between two men over family issues became physical, then fatal.

In a press conference Thursday in Princeton, Lt. J.W. Howell of the Princeton Police Department, said Princeton resident Eddie Harmon, 30, shot and killed Michael Cardwell, 34, of Bluefield, outside his residence at the 400 block of Bee Street in Princeton.

Harmon shot Cardwell in the upper torso with a pistol.

The shooting was initially reported at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Howell said the incident took place on Harmon’s front porch.

“At some point, a gun was produced,” he said. “Officers found Mr. Cardwell lying on the sidewalk.”

Howell said 911 calls were made by eyewitnesses and Harmon’s wife, who was at home at the time.

Author-ities found Harmon inside the home. Howell said he did not try to flee the residence.

Howell would not comment on the family issues that were affecting the two males. However, he said the men’s parents had a relationship.

Howell called the situation “very unfortunate.”

No charges have been filed against Harmon. Howell said statements from both Harmon and eyewitnesses will be turned over to Mercer County Prosecutor Scott Ash.

Howell said self-defense could be a possibility and that drugs or alcohol did not play a role in the incident. The investigation is still on-going, he added.
