Woman to serve probation on child neglect charge

PRINCETON — A local woman who pleaded guilty to a child neglect charge was sentenced Monday to three years probation.

Dovie Small, 46, of Princeton, was charged on July 9, 2013 with child neglect creating a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death following a Facebook feud that led to a chase on U.S. Route 460.

Small was sentenced to three years probation, and ordered to enroll in and complete an anger-management class and drivers safety class, write a letter of apology to the victim and provide monthly proof of insurance on any vehicle that she drives.

The arrest was made after a Dodge Hemi Charger allegedly swerved into Small’s path on Courthouse Road near Princeton. Small, who was also driving a Dodge Charger, pursued the first car west up U.S. Route 460 until both vehicles stopped near Cumberland Road in Bluefield. The Bluefield Police and troopers with the West Virginia State Police stopped the cars.

According to an earlier report, Small’s teenage daughter and a second teenage girl were in her car during the incident. Both girls were “hanging out windows and screaming,” Patrolman K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department said in the earlier report.

Both parties tried to use pepper spray at each other when they arrived in Bluefield, officers said at the time of the arrest.

Small apologized to the court Monday, but Judge William Sadler admonished Small for her behavior, according to information from the Mercer County Circuit Clerks office.
