Search for shooting suspects continue in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — Local police are still searching for suspects and a motive behind a Tuesday afternoon shooting in Bluefield that injured one woman.

The incident occurred approximately 5 p.m. when an individual fired into a crowd of people near the intersection of Stowers and Jefferson Streets, Patrolman J.W. Murray Jr. of the Bluefield Police Department said Tuesday.

Shelia Martin, 26, of Bluefield was transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center to be treated for superficial wounds, Murray said.

No arrests have yet been made, said Lt. C.S. Myers of the Bluefield Police Department.

“We don’t have any concrete suspects at this time,” he said.

Two sets of people, a two black males firing at two other black males, were reported, Myers said. Two vehicles were involved, but investigators have not ascertained whether the suspects were in or out of their vehicles when the shooting took place. There were varying descriptions of the vehicles involved, so no descriptions were being released at this time.

Police were still seeking a motive behind the incident.

“We don’t have any indication what started it, what proceeded it, or what the reasoning behind it was,” Myers said.
