Man arrested for stealing meter, water

GARY — Police have arrested a McDowell County man on charges of illegally connecting to a city water system.

Gregory Rushing, 38, of Gary, was arrested Saturday on warrants stemming from the theft of a water meter and unauthorized use of a stolen meter to gain water without paying for it, Gary Police Chief S.P. “Pat” McKinney said.

McKinney said Rushing was taken to the McDowell County holding unit on charges of petit larceny, tampering with pipes and procuring water with intent to defraud. Magistrate Danny Mitchell later arraigned Rushing and set bail at $1,000. If convicted on all charges, McKinney said Rushing could be fined $2,500 and sentenced to three years in prison.

McKinney said the police department received a complaint about an illegal water hookup and went to Rushing’s home with a water company employee. Once there they found the meter hooked up and water running through it. McKinney said the meter was removed and taken back to the water office where it was found to have been stolen from another water customer’s meter base.
