Body found in roadway; Commuter discovers body of Bluefield, Va., man on Stoney Ridge Road

BRUSHFORK — An investigation began Thursday morning after the body of a Bluefield, Va., man struck by a large “commercial-sized vehicle” was found lying in the roadway on Stoney Ridge Road in Mercer County.

The Bluefield Rescue Squad and deputies with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched at 7:15 a.m. after a commuter discovered a body in the road, according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s department.

Rescue squad members determined the 31-year-old white male was deceased. The victim’s name was not released Thursday pending the notification of next of kin, Senior Deputy A.M. Ballard said.

From evidence collected at the scene, it appeared as if the man was walking on the asphalt in a turn and was hit by a large commercial vehicle, according to the release. The vehicle in question left the scene and did not contact Mercer County 911.

The case was still under investigation Thursday. A suspect commercial-style vehicle was being checked, but its description was not being released pending additional investigation and evidence collection, according to the release. A brief on-site examination by Medical Examiner J. Sommers indicated that the incident occurred less than two hours prior to being reported, Ballard said.

Detective Cpl. L.B. Murphy is the lead investigator in the case. Senior Deputy W.C. Wilborn, Senior Deputy D.W. Sparks, Ballard, Sgt. G.W. Woods and Sheriff Don Meadows went to the Stoney Ridge Road scene Thursday morning after the body was discovered.
