RICHLANDS, Va. —
The coalfields of eastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia will be well represented in Washington, D.C., at the “Count on Coal: American Energy Jobs Rally” from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Barbara Altizer of the Eastern Coal Council based in Richlands, Va., said that three buses will leave from the region Monday morning to join an estimated 50-60 buses headed for the rally on the west side of the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.
“Our three buses are nearly full right now,” Altizer said. “We have 130 people and I still haven’t heard how many people one of our local companies will be sending. We could add another bus, but that all depends on the response we get (today). I could use Friday to find the money to get another bus, so it would be good to know if there was a need to do that.”
Altizer said one bus will be leaving at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, from the Walmart parking lot in Lebanon, Va. Another two buses will leave the Claypool Hill, Va., Walmart at 9 a.m., and the Bluefield, W.Va., Kmart parking lot at 9:30 a.m., also on Oct. 28.
“We’re asking anyone who wants to travel with the group to be at the respective parking lots about 30 minutes before the buses are scheduled to depart,” Altizer said. She encouraged anyone else who wants to travel to the rally to contact her at 276-964-6363, 276-964-9088, or email ecc@eastern coalcouncil.net. “If there is additional interest, they need to call me as soon as possible,” she said.
U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will serve as emcee of the rally with speakers including U.S. Senators Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., Mark Warner, D-Va., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to name a few.
“I think it’s going to be a remarkable event,” Altizer said.
Along with coal miners and coal industry supporters, others represented at the rally include American energy workers, American manufacturing workers and Americans who care about affordable energy,” according to Altizer.
