Buchanan nets 23 in drug roundup

GRUNDY, Va. — More than 20 people were arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances after local law enforcement agencies conducted a sweep of the Buchanan County, Va., area.

The 29th Judicial Drug Task Force along with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police and the Grundy Town Police Department made 23 arrests after executing drug indictments, according to a statement released Monday by the sheriff’s office. Numerous amounts of narcotics were seized during the operation.

More arrests are to follow, Sheriff Ray Foster said. The operation was conducted the morning of Sept. 11.

The following individuals have been arrested and charged:

• Nathan Ray Blankenship, 24, of Vansant, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substance; common nuisance; and conspiracy to distribute I and II controlled substances.

• Johnny Casey, 49, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule I and II controlled substance; common nuisance; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances.

• Stephanie Alissa Casey, 24, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule I and II controlled substance; common nuisance; and conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances.

• Aaron Matthew Chapman, 23, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule I and II controlled substance; and common nuisance.

• Lisa Gay Chapman, 48, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule III controlled substance; and common nuisance.

• Dreama Mae Charles, 30, Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule I and II controlled substances; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances; common nuisance; and child endangerment.

• Terra Leigh Conners, 39, of Vansant, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances; and common nuisance.

• Ricky L Deel, 54, of Oakwood, Va., was charged with money laundering; possession of gun by a felon; possession of schedule I and II controlled substances; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substance; common nuisance; possession of ammunition by a convicted felon; and distribution of a schedule IV controlled substance.

• Charles Ryan Fuller, 30, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; common nuisance; and conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances.

• George Henry Goble Jr., 60, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with delivery of  a drug to prisoner.

• Eddie Dwayne Green, 38, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with manufacture of methamphetamine; conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine; and common nuisance.

• Kenneth Grigsby, 58, of Oakwood, Va., was charged with possession of schedule I and II controlled substances; and possession drug paraphernalia.

• Victoria Stephanie Marie Hale, 37, of Pilgrims Knob, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; and common nuisance.

• Crystal Gail Hall, 33, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substance; and common nuisance.

• Bobby Hurley, 33, of Haysi, Va., was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

• Betty Leona Layne, 29, of Vansant, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule III controlled substance; conspiracy to distribute a schedule III controlled substance; and common nuisance.

• Jody Lester, 53, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with distribution of marijuana and common nuisance.

• Terry McClanahan, 46, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with manufacture of methamphetamine; and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

• Patricia Joyce Piistaspanen, 41, of Big Rock, Va., was charged with distribution of a schedule IV controlled substance; and common nuisance.

• Dale Franklin Rife, 53, of Hurley, Va., was charged with distribution schedule I and II controlled substances; and common nuisance.

• Catherine Denise St. Claire, 29, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; and common nuisance.

• Jasmine Jade Stacy, 23, of Hurley, Va., was charged with manufacture of methamphetamine; and conspire to manufacture methamphetamine.

• Ralph Stanley Stacy, 50, of Grundy, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule I and II controlled substances; conspiracy to distribute schedule I and II controlled substances; and common nuisance.

• Wayne Stiltner, 47, of Raven, Va., was charged with distribution of schedule III controlled substances; and common nuisance.

    Traffic on Interstate 77 was still backed up about 14 miles in Bland County, Va., Saturday evening, but the Virginia Department of Transportation reported at about 6 p.m. that both northbound lanes of I-77 through East River Mountain were open to traffic.

    Lights in the southern end of the tunnel illuminate an odd design beside the catwalk near the left lane of the northbound tube of the East River Mountain Tunnel that transports I-77 from Virginia into West Virginia. Two firefighters who made the initial assault through the total darkness of the soot and smoke-filled tunnel left those marks as they slid their arms along the catwalk wall on their journey back to the light.
