Man who shot and killed his wife pleads guilty to second-degree murder

WELCH — A McDowell County man who was going on trial today for first-degree murder in the August 2011 murder of his wife has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Robert Johnson, 69, of O’Toole, now faces 10 to 40 years in prison, said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jason Grubb.

Johnson shot his wife, 67-year-old Patricia Johnson, at their home on Aug. 31, 2011. Johnson tried to take his own life soon afterward, but a bullet he fired under his chin was deflected by his dentures and lodged in his brain, Grubb said.

Sentencing was set for June 5 before Circuit Court Judge Booker Stephens. Johnson was remanded to the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden.
