Man cited in Bluefield for having more than three pit bulls, failing to muzzle animals

BLUEFIELD — A Bluefield man has received several citations after police found a large number of pit bulls at his residence.

Bluefield Police Chief D.M. Dillow said the man came to the police department to register his pit bulls and claimed to have 15 dogs, which Dillow said is over the limit of three cats or dog allowed by city ordinance.

“He was taking in dogs and breeding them,” Dillow said. “He came up to register them with the city and we went out to check on the conditions. However, by the time we got to the residence, he had given away all but seven of the dogs. He had someone coming to pick up four of the dogs so he would only have the three allowed by city ordinance, but he was cited for having four more dogs than allowed when the officer got there.”

Dillow said the man was also cited for failing to muzzle and confine the dogs as per the city ordinance.

Dillow said currently 45 pit bulls are registered to 33 owners with the police department as part of the city’s pit bull ordinance.
