Craig Hammond, executive director of the Bluefield Union Mission, was named the “2013 Distinguished Citizen” by Bluefield’s Riley-Vest Post No. 9 of the American Legion. Hammond grew up in Chicago, and was working on the railroad before relocating to Bluefield where his father and mother, the late Allen and Mary Hammond, were directors of the Union Mission.
The post started presenting a distinguished citizen award in 1937. In accepting the award, Hammond, also the host of the “Radio Active” talk show, expressed optimism in Bluefield’s future. “Watch Bluefield,” he said. “I think it’s going to take off again.”
