A PikeView High School teacher and coach resigned Tuesday amid an investigation by the West Virginia State Police.
Mercer County School Board Member Mary Alice Kaufman confirmed the board accepted the resignation of Jonathan Kirk, a PikeView High School physical education teacher and assistant varsity football coach, Tuesday evening.
Kaufman said Kirk tendered his resignation during a special called board meeting Tuesday and his resignation is "effective immediately."
Kaufman said she could not comment on the reason for Kirk’s resignation due to an ongoing investigation by the school board and police.
"It is part of an ongoing investigation," Kaufman said. "We suspect there was a violation of school board policy. Until the investigation is complete, we cannot comment on this situation. The school board will be cooperating with police in any way we can."
Kaufman said Kirk was previously suspended for 30 working days without pay on Jan. 15. In addition to working as a teacher and football coach,
Kirk ended a term as PikeView’s assistant baseball coach in July 2012.
Sgt. M.D. Clemons, with the Crimes Against Children Unit of the West Virginia State Police, confirmed there is an investigation into Kirk underway.
