UPDATE: High winds, rain and snow impact region, power outages reported

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD — A high wind warning for Mercer and Tazewell counties remains in effect until 4 p.m. this evening. A winter storm warning remains in effect for Monroe County until 7 p.m. this evening.

In addition to strong winds, rain and eventually snow are all in the forecast for today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va. Strong wind gusts are expected again tonight, with snow accumulating between 1 to 3 inches.

The high winds are being blamed on a number of power outages across the region this morning.

In Mercer County, more than 1,078 people are without power, according to Appalachian Power. Another 130 are out in Giles County. Tazewell County officials report the lights have blinked “on and off” in Pocahontas this morning.
