Miner killed Wednesday following accident at Boone County mine

RACINE, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a miner at a Patriot Coal subsidiary's operation in southern West Virginia.

The accident is the fifth mining-related fatality in West Virginia this year. It's the first since Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin urged a statewide time-out for safety talks in February.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says the miner was hit by a rock that fell from the roof of Newtown Energy's Peerless Rachel Mine in Boone County.

MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere tells media outlets that the miner died after he was brought to the surface.

The accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The miner hasn't been identified. Louviere says he was a roof bolter at the mine.

The mine employs about 130 workers.
