Former PSHS counselor, Bowyer, gets another year added to sentence

BLUEFIELD — A former Princeton Senior High School counselor, serving a 10-year federal prison sentence for child pornography, received an additional year in prison on Monday for failing to appear for a 2012 sentence hearing.

Brett David Bowyer, 34, of Scarbro, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber in Bluefield federal court, according to U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin.

Bowyer’s original sentencing hearing was scheduled in Bluefield on May 30, 2012. Bowyer was later arrested on June 12, 2013, in Florida after being stopped for failing to change lanes by a Brevard County sheriff’s deputy. The deputy checked Bowyer for outstanding warrants and discovered he was wanted in West Virginia.

According to previous reports, Bowyer admitted that on Sept. 17, 2010, he knowingly possessed more than 600 images and videos depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. He pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in October of 2011.

Bowyer’s sentence will run consecutive with his current prison term.

The United States Marshals Service and the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Lisa Johnston handled the prosecution.
