Report finds drug-related crimes increasing in Southwest Virginia

TAZEWELL, Va. — Despite a slight decline over last year in some areas, the number of drug-related crimes in Southwest Virginia have risen during the past decade.

According to the recently released 2012 Virginia Crime Analysis Report, violent crimes declined between 2011 and 2012 in Buchanan and Giles counties but rose in Tazewell County. Bland County saw its violent crime level remain relatively the same. Since 2002, statistics showed violent crimes have risen in Bland, Giles, and Tazewell counties but declined in Buchanan County.

Non-violent crimes rose between 2011 and 2012 in Giles and Tazewell counties but declined in Bland and Buchanan. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of drug or narcotics crimes rose in Bland and Tazewell counties but declined slightly in Buchanan and Giles counties. The number of drug or narcotics crimes have rise in all four counties since 2002.
