Deputies analyze stabbing

TAZEWELL, Va. — A male suspect is in custody and the victim — his mother — was out of surgery at Bluefield Regional Medical Center on Friday as Tazewell County sheriff’s deputies continued their investigation of an early morning stabbing incident on Bowman Road in Abbs Valley, Va.

During a press conference Friday afternoon at the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office it was announced that Ryan Thomas Fox, 30, of Abbs Valley, had been charged with the malicious wounding of his mother, Cherrie Whitt, 51, also of Abbs Valley, according to Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt, who said that Whitt is “doing OK,” after surgery.

Hieatt said that at 5 a.m. Friday morning, the Tazewell County 911 center received a call from a female caller who “said her brother had just assaulted and stabbed her mother,” Hieatt said. After making the call, Hieatt said the daughter, her mother and another male fled from the house where the stabbing took place and went to a neighbor’s house.

According to Hieatt, Tazewell County sheriff’s deputies immediately went in route to the residence. Rescue 945, Bluefield, Va., Rescue Squad, Abbs Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia State Police also responded to the call.

Hieatt said that law enforcement officers aren’t sure what escalated the situation, but he said that her son used a knife in the confrontation. “She had two stab wounds to the face and to the neck,” Hieatt said. He said that other family members were in the house when the incident took place.

After Whitt was transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center and taken into emergency surgery, Deputy Jeshua Harder communicated via his PA system to Fox who was inside the house and talked him into coming outside. Hieatt said that “once he came outside,” he was placed under arrest.

Sgt. Mike Brown was the first Tazewell investigator on the scene. Lt. C.E. McNerlin was at the scene and was also present at the press conference. Hieatt said that crime scene investigators from the Virginia State Police also assisted with the investigation.

“We appreciate all of the assistance we received from all of the agencies,” Hieatt said.

Fox is in custody in the Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell. He is being held without bond. Hieatt said that Fox will probably be held until Tuesday before being taken before a Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge.
