A former employee of the Mercer County School system was sentenced today on a federal possession of child pornography charge.
Brett David Bowyer, 34, of Scarbro was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on a charge of possession of child pornography by Senior U.S. District Judge David A. Farber, according to U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin. Bowyer previously pled guilty to possession of child pornography in October 2011 and 10 years is the maximum sentence for the charge, Goodwin said.
Bowyer was previously employed as a school counselor at Princeton Senior High School.
Goodwin said he was originally scheduled to be sentenced on May 30, 2012 but failed to appear at the hearing. He was arrested in Florida on June 12 on a traffic violation and then extradited back to West Virginia.
Bowyer was indicted on June 18 by a federal grand jury in Huntington for failing to appear for his May 2012 sentencing hearing. He faces up to an additional five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
