Two men jailed on unrelated sex offender charges

PRINCETON — Two men wanted on unrelated felony charges were arrested Friday after stories about their fugitive status appeared in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.

Harry Barney, 38, wanted on a felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, was arrested Friday morning by Cpl. J.C. Long, of the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment.

“He called (the detachment) and asked why his picture was on the front page of the paper,” Long said. “I told him I had a warrant for him.”

Long said Barney turned himself in at the Princeton detachment where he was arrested. He was arraigned Friday afternoon and a $4,000 cash bond was set. Barney was unable to post bond and is currently incarcerated at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.

Barney was previously convicted in McDowell County Circuit Court for third-degree sexual abuse of a minor child. His current warrant stems from failing to update his registry status.

“He was living at a second address in the Bluefield area,” Long said.

Mark Fleming, 47, originally of the Princeton area, who was wanted on multiple felony charges unrelated to Barney, was arrested Friday evening by officers with the U.S. Marshals Service.

“He was in a psychiatric treatment facility in Roanoke, Va.,” Long said. “He was released and arrested. He will see a judge sometime next week for an extradition hearing to come back to West Virginia.”

Fleming, who was previously convicted of child abuse with risk of injury sexually motivated, is now facing three felony counts of failure to register.

Long said Fleming is currently incarcerated in Roanoke.
