3-vehicle crash injures 4

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

SPEEDWAY — Four people were injured, with one injured seriously enough to be air-lifted from the scene, following a three vehicle wreck at noon on Thursday near the Speedway community of Mercer County.

“A young female victim had to be life flighted from the crash scene,” Cpl. A.P. Christian of the Princeton Detachment of the West Virginia State Police said. “The helicopter took off in the direction of Charleston, but I’m not certain at this point as to what facility the victim was flown to.”

According to Christian, two vehicles were traveling south on Route 20 in the vicinity of the old Speedway gas station. “The vehicle in front slowed down to make a turn into a gas station, but the vehicle that was behind did not slow down,” Christian said. He said that the northernmost of the southbound vehicles attempted to avoid contact with the vehicle that slowed down to make a turn.

The vehicle in back hit the back of the other southbound vehicle, and crossed the center line where it ran into a northbound vehicle,” Christian said. “Everybody was injured,” he said. “All four are from Mercer County.” Christian added that the other crash victims did not appear to be injured as seriously as the victim that was flown from the scene.

He said that one of the vehicles was a Honda SUV, another was a Honda sedan and the third vehicle was a commercial pickup truck. Christian said that the safety devices in the Hondas — seat belts and air bags — prevented additional serious injuries.

Christian said that Cpl. P.H. Shrewsbury is investigating the accident. The Princeton Rescue Squad as well as the Athens and East River volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.
