BLUEFIELD — The Greater Bluefield Ministerial Association is sponsoring a Longest Night/Blue Christmas Service and Prayer Vigil for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting.

The vigil will be held on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 401 College Avenue, Bluefield..

The service will include a prayer time for the victims of the school violence. The Longest Night Service or Blue Christmas was started as a way to help people cope with the stress and pain of the holidays, according to Craig Hammond, director of the Bluefield Union Mission. The service is designed to comfort those who find the holidays difficult for many reasons, including the loss of loved ones, loss of a job, being alone in a new place, illness or any other life situation that might make holidays painful, Hammond said.
