Second rabid skunk is confirmed near the border of Tazewell and Russell counties

TAZEWELL, Va. — A second skunk collected on June 4 from the Wardell area of Russell County near the Russell and Tazewell county line near Southwest Virginia Community College has tested positive for rabies, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

This is the second confirmed case of animal rabies in Russell County and in the Cumberland Plateau Health District this year.

The health department is asking residents to be wary of suspicious animals and to ensure they keep their pets’ vaccinations up to date, according to a health department press release.

The health department adds that residents also should avoid wild animals or any suspicious animal and immediately report any potential human exposure or exposure to their animals, by contacting the local health department or local animal control officers.
