Russell County man faces armed robbery charges in Tazewell County

TAZEWELL, Va. — A Russell County man is facing armed robbery and the possibility of other charges after surrendering Friday morning to deputies with the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s dispatchers were told at 11:58 p.m. Thursday by store clerks at the Fas Mart off the Gov. G.C. Peery Highway in Claypool Hill that they had just been robbed by a suspect armed with a knife or box cutter, according to Chief Deputy Harold Heatley. A little more than $345 was stolen.

Deputies and investigators were dispatched to the scene. While in route, the deputies were notified that a person matching the robbery suspect’s description had entered the Little General Store in Rich-lands, Va., and went behind the counter with a box cutter, but no demands for money were made, Heatley said.

Witness testimony and surveillance videos soon identified the alleged robber as Bobby Shannon Altizer, 29, of Swords Creek, Va.

Clerks at the store gave investigators at description of the suspect’s truck and its license tag number, said Sheriff Brian Hieatt. The store’s camera also captured good video footage.

“And at one of the other stores he tried to rob, the man personally knew him,” Hieatt said.

The hardest part of the investigation was locating Altizer.

“We went to his residence and family members. We wanted to find him before he attempted to rob another store. What we spent all night doing was trying to track him down,” Hieatt said.

Heatley was able to contact Altizer by phone at approximately 5:30 a.m. and after a conversation, persuaded Altizer to turn himself in, Hieatt said. Altizer was taken into custody at approximately 6 a.m. at the Shell Station in Claypool Hill, Va.

Altizer has been charged with armed robbery. He is currently being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Tazewell, Va.

The Richlands Police Department and Russell County Sheriff’s Office also worked on the investigation.

“Tonight was a perfect example of agencies working together to bring these criminals to justice,” Hieatt said.

Altizer is also a suspect in an attempted robbery of a Russell County business, the Valero gas station in Rosedale, Va.
